Common questions

How do I play?
The numbers beside each row and above each column are the lengths of the runs of filled cells in that line, in order, with at least one empty cell between runs. Tap to fill a cell, switch to X to mark cells you know are empty, or drag to mark a whole run. Finish the grid and the picture appears in color.

Do I ever need to guess?
No. Every puzzle has exactly one answer, and you can always reach it by logic.

How do hints work?
Tap the light bulb. If something on your board is wrong, the hint shows that first. Otherwise it highlights the next logical step and explains why it works.

The cells are small on my iPhone.
On big grids tap the magnifier to zoom in. Choose Move to slide the grid; the clues stay lined up with it.

When does the daily picture change?
At midnight UTC, the same moment for everyone in the world. Your streak counts the days in a row you solved the daily picture on its own day.

Why is my time not on the leaderboard?
The Game Center leaderboard takes your first solve of today's daily picture without hints, and only while you are signed in to Game Center. Signing in is optional; the app works fully without it.

Can I change the colours?
Turn on Color-blind friendly marks in Settings. Paintgrid also follows your dark mode setting.

How do I add the widget?
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Paintgrid. It shows today's picture and your streak.

I bought the unlock. How do I get it back on a new device?
Open Settings in Paintgrid and tap Restore purchase. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with. Family Sharing is supported.

Is my progress backed up?
Your progress is saved on your device and is included in your normal iPhone or iPad backup. Deleting the app deletes your progress.

Where do the pictures come from?
Many pictures are based on Microsoft Fluent Emoji (MIT License) and some daily pictures use Kenney's 1-Bit Pack (CC0). The full license text is in Settings, Credits and licenses.
